Architectural Shingles: The Standard Choice

Architectural shingles (sometimes called dimensional or laminate shingles) are what we install on most homes in Southern Maryland. They are a significant step up from the 3-tab shingles that were standard through the 1990s.

The main difference: architectural shingles are thicker, making them more resistant to wind uplift. They have a dimensional appearance that resembles natural slate or wood shake. And they last longer, typically 25 to 30 years versus 15 to 20 for 3-tab. (Learn more about shingle types from the National Roofing Contractors Association)

GAF Timberline HDZ is the product we install most often (see full specs on the official GAF website). It carries a Class 4 impact resistance rating and is rated for wind speeds up to 130 mph with proper installation. For most homeowners in Calvert County and the surrounding area, it is the right balance of performance and cost.
