The Best Roofing Shingles for Southern Maryland Homes

Southern Maryland is not an easy climate for exterior building materials. You have got high summer humidity, coastal salt air near the bay and rivers, hard freezes in winter, and storm seasons that bring real wind and hail. Not every shingle handles all of that equally well. (Learn more about regional weather risks from the National Weather Service)

Here is what we have found works best for homes in this area.

ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLES: THE STANDARD CHOICE

Architectural shingles (sometimes called dimensional or laminate shingles) are what we install on most homes in Southern Maryland. They are a significant step up from the 3-tab shingles that were standard through the 1990s. (Basic roofing system info from the National Roofing Contractors Association)

The main differences: architectural shingles are thicker, which makes them more resistant to wind uplift. They have a dimensional appearance that looks more like natural slate or wood shake. And they last longer — typically 25 to 30 years versus 15 to 20 for 3-tab.

GAF Timberline HDZ is the product we install most often (see full specifications on the official GAF website). It carries a Class 4 impact resistance rating and is rated for wind speeds up to 130 mph with proper installation. For most homeowners in Calvert County and the surrounding area, it is the right balance of performance and cost.

IMPACT-RESISTANT SHINGLES: WORTH THE UPGRADE IN SOME CASES

If your home has experienced hail damage before, or if you are in an area that takes the brunt of severe weather coming up from the Chesapeake Bay, impact-resistant shingles are worth considering. (Storm protection guidance from FEMA)

Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are tested against steel ball impacts and rated to resist cracking (testing standards explained by UL Solutions). Some insurance companies in Maryland offer premium discounts for homes with Class 4 shingles — ask your insurance agent whether that applies to your policy before you decide.

The cost difference is typically a few hundred to around a thousand dollars more than standard architectural shingles on a full replacement, depending on roof size.

WHAT ABOUT COLOR?

Color is mostly a personal preference, but there is one practical factor worth knowing: lighter roofing shingles reflect more heat and can reduce cooling costs in summer (energy efficiency basics from the U.S. Department of Energy). In a region that sees hot, humid summers, that is worth thinking about.

That said, most homeowners prioritize the look of the shingle over the slight energy efficiency difference. We bring samples to every estimate so you can see the actual product in the actual colors before anything is ordered.

WHAT WE DO NOT RECOMMEND

We do not install 3-tab shingles as a replacement product. The cost savings are minimal over the life of the roof, and the reduction in durability and appearance is not worth it. If a contractor is pushing 3-tab on a replacement job, ask why.
